Unpack: ERROR: Unknown option: ai

Post by Clay »

I just updated to RC4 (on FreeBSD) and am getting this error:

Unpack:
[somenzb] ERROR: Unknown option: ai

I've gotten it on every job. Any idea what could cause this?

It means that you have an unsupported unrar.
Didn't you get a warning?

Don't think so. I may have missed it though.

What do I do instead? It has worked in all previous versions.

Install a proper version from rarlabs:
They have one for freeBSD too: http://www.rarlab.com/rar/rarbsd-3.9.1.tar.gz
You only need the unrar part, the rest is payware.

What's wrong with the normal unrar provided by the freebsd ports system?

I deleted the unrar pkg and put the unrar from the link above in /usr/local/bin. Things seem to be working now.

Almost all reports of CRC errors coming from Linux/BSD users
can be traced back to the "free" unrars.
It looks like the free unrar hasn't kept up with more recent versions of RAR formats
(or there are just too many bugs in them).

Rarlabs provides source code and binaries for almost every platform.
There's no need for "free" alternatives, except for purists.
Plus posters on Usenet all use the commercial version anyway,
so there's not much choice.

'-ai' was a recently added command line option for UNRAR. This option does not exist on older versions of UNRAR such as 3.8 which is still in heavy use, so I have removed the option for now.

This change might not be in the next RC release, it depends.
