Internet speed slows down to a crawl

Post by galaxian »

Hello,

I have run SABnzbd with no problems since I started using it several months ago until recently.
For some reason as of a little over a month ago when I run SABnzbd anything else that uses the connection will slow down to a crawl. Web browsing etc.

This only happens with SABnzbd. I can have torrents downloading at 5mb/sec and everything else runs fine.

This happens on both of my computers. (iMac, MacBook Pro)

Here's some info:

Version: SABnzbd+ 0.5.2rc1
OS: OSX 10.6.3
Install-type: OSX.app
Firewall Software: None
Are you using IPV6? No
Is the issue reproducible? Yes

I've dropped back to previous versions but that doesn't fix the problem.
As soon as SABnzbd is shut down the speed returns to normal.
The speed of the download doesn't seem to matter, it can be going at 100k/sec or 5mb/sec.

I've searched around but haven't had any luck.
Any ideas?

Stop SABnzbd, remove all files in the cache folder and restart.
/home/user/Library/Application Support/SABnzbd/cache

Your queue will be lost.
Also all your RSS feeds will think they are new.

I spoke too soon.. It did work for a little while but it's back to being slow again.
What is strange is that I can have a torrent uploading and downloading at very high speeds at the same time without issues, I can't figure out why a download only would cause this.

Is the only solution at the moment to keep clearing the cache before every download?

Thanks for the help.

Our OSX expert is not available at the moment.
So it may take a while to get a proper answer.

Just a note: I've updated to the latest 0.5.2 release with no change.
Any news on when your OSX expert will be available?

So far we see speed problems only when you have a truly
large queue (over 50 jobs, over 200GB in the queue).
Or when you have a refresh rate of the skin that to too low.
Keep the refresh rate above 5 sec.

Hi,

I can attest to the above statements. Again I got a large queue and speed seems 2 vary a lot! The trick with the cache seems to work for a while but after a while the speed seems to drop. (I'm working on a synology NAS) Up until now everything seems to work perfectly in SABnzbd, save the large queue problem. (http://forums.sabnzbd.org/index.php?topic=4118.0)
Still... great product! It's free and u dont hear me complain! I queue no more then 2 or 3 nzb's and it goes A-OK! Although a lot of files stay in the cache dir afterwards...

Greetz!

There will be a proper solution for this in release 0.6.0.
Expect a first test release within 4-6 weeks.

Thx m8! But also remember to take a vacation now and then ;-)

Question about the GUI refreshrate. Do u mean a refresh of '0-5' sec  or '5 and above' sec. Little confused about that....but then again, I have no brains I run on windows... ;-)

Keep refresh rates reasonable. So 5 seconds or more.
0 is killing, 1 is bad, 5 is OK, 10 is perfect etc.

Thanks for the help shypike.
I was using the Classic theme and it appeared that the Connections was updating every 5 seconds.
I changed to a different theme (smpl), changed the refresh rate interval to 1 minute, and cleared out the cache and everything was fine .. for a minute.

After downloading 1 file with seemingly no interruptions in speed, I tried another and was immediately hit with practically unusable speeds once again. I should note also that I didn't have a queue. I downloaded the first file, and proceeded with the next file by manually adding it to the watched folder. No other files in the queue.

Just to double-check, I started up a torrent and was downloading at a solid 1+mb/sec and uploading as well, with no interruption to my speed.

If there is any other information I can give you to help fix this issue please let me know.

Did you already clean out the "cache" folder?
This will remove your queue too.
