One last desperate guess.
Determine the numerical IP address of your Usenet server
and use that as server host name.
In case the DNS lookup causes problems.

Update:

I removed everything from the cache folder and the logs folder once more,
triple-checked all my settings, gave it another go.

So far I've successfully downloaded 5 files without interruption to speed.  :)
The files have been fairly small in size however, which could be why things have been running smoothly.
I'll update this thread in a few days with how things are running.

I've tested this several times and couldn't figure out why it sometimes worked and sometimes didn't until I had the cache folder open and watched it as a file downloaded.

I found that when I downloaded a large file the cache folder would end up with a huge amount of files in it, and it would constantly either be adding more or taking them away as the file downloaded. My connection destroyed immediately until the number of files decreased, maybe as it was coming to the end of the download. The problem with this is that simply clearing out the cache doesn't work as the file creates more files in the cache folder as it downloads.

Smaller files seem to work ok however.

I should note I've done all this with no other files in the queue.

Hope this info is useful, thank you again.

There's file leakage in the cache folder.
That will be eliminated in the next major release (0.6.0).
Above a certain number of files in one folder (different per OS), things become slow.

Next time your queue is empty, remove all files starting with "SABnzbd_".

I seem to be having the same problem with the speed slowing down to 0 kb/sec.  Except everything was fine until last night.  Ihad no problems downloading huge gb files then this morning I checke and my queue was still not empty from last night. After going back and forth with my news server (newshosting.com), they told me I was the only one with these problems then I found this thread.

My experience haas been almost exactly like galaxian except as I stated, it just started last night.  Any time I make nay changes to SABnzbd config (server ports, SSL etc) the download starts up and then crawls to 0 in about 1 minute.  Then when I tried clearing out the cache, I get the same result.  It seems I can download small files ok but anything over 1gb does not complete.  I have 1 file in the queue that has 0 bytes left to download but it will not start repair/verify, it is just stuck there.

So I guess the only course of action is to wait for the 0.6.0 release?  Is there an ETA?  I just don't know why this started all of a sudden.

BTW, I'm not being critical in anyway, SABnzbd has been the greatest usenet download tool in the best set it and forget fashion for me and I wouldn't think about using any other download tool.  It is only because it has been so easy to use (once set up) and works so quietly and hidden from view that this recent hiccup is so jarring to me.  Anyway, I await the release of 0.6.0 and if there is anything in the way of diagnostic information I can send you, please let me know.

That may be another problem.
When using multiple servers and one server refuses to say that it doesn't have an article, the job gets stuck.
Just remove this job.
Then stop SABnzbd and start it once like this:
"c:\program files\SABnzbd\SABnzbd.exe" --clean
This will wipe the queue and any debris in the cache folder.

oops, forgot to mention I am on Mac OSX 10.6.4.

any idea why this started yesterday?  everything was fine until then.  I didn't change a thing on SABnzbd.  I started using NZBMatrix a few weeks ago and before that it was mainly newzbin.

Stop SABnzbd.
Use the Finder to remove all files from /home/user/Library/Application Support/SABnzbd/cache
Start SABnzbd.

Seems to be working ok today, at least for now.  I had done what you suggested several times yesterday.  Each time, the download would begin, make the max connections but then the connections quickly dropped out until there were none and download ceased.

Right now I'm downloading a 5gb file and thngs look peachy, let's hope it stays that way.

Thanks for your help.

This not cache pollution, because that will not happen so fast.
Also the NZB sources have little or no influence.
Very likely a complex mix of SABnzbd, the OS, your router, ISP etc.
Extremely hard to diagnose.
