every download fails

Post by boomstyliemikey »

Hi, I usually use bit torrent but thought Id give usenet ago. I've tried grabit and newsleecher and couldn't manage to work out how to get any of them working. This one seemed a bit simpler so I gave it a shot. The problem I'm having is bar one download which was 30mb every download I try fails. I get the message "Download failed - Out of your server's retention? " I was hoping you could tell me what might be causing this. The downloads I've tried have ranged from 2 hours old to 5 days. No Longer and all from sites such as newzbin and newzleech. I also have news.virginmedia.com as my server. Im running 0.5.3 on windows 7.
Ive included a screen shot. Any advice would be a great help as im struggling with this whole usenet thing

Check your folder settings.
Where is the "temporary download folder" located.
Errors there can sometimes confuse SABnzbd's post processor.
Do you see errors and warnings in SABnzbd's UI?

BTW: I'm surprised that you cannot get things working with Grabit.
It's about the simplest Usenet program available.

shypike, thanks for your reply.
My incomplete downloads folder is documents/downloads/incomplete. There is nothing in there other than a tiger woods game im currently trying to download and then all of my failed downloads have been put in my complete file.

In Sabnzbd I noticed that the downloads wouldn't even start as I always had 0kbs even though the yellow status bar was moving up like it was downloading. My free disc space was not changing and nether were the MB this week which would have all changed if i had downloaded anything at all so don't know why the status bar as moving up.

I found grabit  a absolute nightmare. Spent hours on google trying to research the problem but couldnt find anything. I kept on getting the error "article not found"

It's still possible that you have invalid NZB files.
Does SABnzbd give any "missing article" messages?

Please email me an NZB that fails with you (preferably a small one).

Hey,
I sent you a email with a nzb file. I forgot to say that Sabnzbd doesnt give me any missing article message. That was just grabit,

Thanks

Though outsourced to Highwinds, 'news.virginmedia.com' has very limited retention, some say only a few days.

Hi, I got a free trial with giganews and that has sorted all my problems out. It must have been the news.virginmedia.com server. Thank you both so much for your help :-)

I'm having the same problem, even on files only a few days old. I am also on the Giganews trial.

My downloads folders are C:\Users\Dahak\Downloads\Usenet\complete and C:\...\incomplete. I want to give this Usenet business a real try, but at the moment I'm not having any luck.

Edit: Using 0.5.3 on Win 7 64-bit.

You might just have bad luck with your NZB files.
Have you tried an alternative program, like Grabit?

I have since tried Grabit and haven't had any more luck. Would someone be interested in posting a link to a small one that they know works?

I appear to simply have had astoundingly bad luck with my binaries, just had a couple work fine. Anyone have any tips to avoid such things in the future? I'm new to this business and all I can think of are to go for the newest possible set and avoid anything that doesn't seem to be the right size.

Try to get into one of the reputable indexers like nzbs.org or nzbmatrix.com.
More info: http://wiki.sabnzbd.org/nzb-sources
Other than that: get used to it. This is Usenet.
