Persistent pixelation - what's wrong with my unraring?

Post by mr.sparkle »

Using sabnzbd 0.5/astraweb, increasingly often, after piecing together a video with winrar (on windows 7/64), there will be certain sections that are pixelated (audio is fine, though, and I can play through just fine - using MPC and XBMC). Running winrar again usually corrects the originally affected part of the video, but a new section may now become pixelated.

Anybody else ever get this problem? I know it sounds stupid but how do you properly/accurately unrar? Is there some kind of speed control to slow down like when burning disks?

Quickpar says the rars were repaired fine but beyond watching the file the whole way through, I really don't know how to ensure winrar worked properly. I've also put the same rar set through Gpar/unrar on my other machine running Lucid, and no errors are reported but pixelation persists.

I've run memory tests, which returned no errors. I really have no idea where in the chain the problem is.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions/direction...

Maybe the release is of a bad quality on those sections of the video

Thanks for the quick response, but I don't think that's it. I can re-run winrar/rarzilla/unrar on two different OSes and the original pixelation will always be corrected, but a new problem area will pop up. Really weird.

I have the same version of sab and am using astraweb as well and every time I have had this problem I've noticed there is a proper release shortly after (usually 720p TV episodes). Other than that I cannot say I experience this.

There is no way to check the correct working of WinRAR, unless you have the original files.
So only the poster can do this check and for him/her it's an easy thing to do.
WinRAR has an excellent track record regarding quality and bugs they have had
are never about unreliability of compression and decompression.
