I'm actually wondering: what's the advantage of using the renamer/mover of CouchPotato (and Sickbeard for that matter) over the build in Movie and TV renamer/sorter in SABnzbd+?

I've always used the build in renamers of SABnzbd+ and am pretty happy with the results. What's the motivation to use the CP or SB renamers?

Because the renamers in both Sickbeard and CouchPotato use external databases (thetvdb.com, imdb.com, etc) to pull in movie information. The built in renamer is decent but it's really more or less a "cleanup" kind of tool whereas the other two can rename your files exactly. Plus Sickbeard generates tbn and nfo files for everything which makes it really, really easy for any Media Center front end to index your shows. Couchpotato is working on something similar I believe.

I upgraded my arch linux installation today and both Sickbeard and Couchpotato broke. Sickbeard starts/runs but I can’t access the message, Couchpotato won’t start at all.
The logs of both applications complain about not finding config.cplog, but Google shows zero useful information on this error:

No 2.7 should work to. But if both SB and CP don't work, its definitely a python issue.

the 'çlick for update' thingy updated my git version just fine but it somehow broke my thumbnails.
theyve all disappeared

I updated the updater, finally.. It now doesn't try to use git to update. That just didn't work properly for everyone.

To use the updater, you have to remove the .git directory inside your CouchPotato folder. Otherwise, you just have to do a manual "git pull".

Also, the updater can be disabled, so you don't get the "annoying" update message

Had to dive into the terminal to get the .git folder (=hidden) removed but now I'm up-to-date again without having a "fatal" version! Nice job!
