downloading to an external hard drive?

Does anyone know how to change the system folder to download to an external hard drive directly?  how do you change the path where it says user folders and system folder. FYI I am using osx. p

Use this line:  /Volumes/nameofextdrive/downloadfolder

You can also use Safari, clear the download folder field and drag&drop the download folder from the finder to the field in Safari.
It won't work with another browser.

Use absolute paths, you discs are stored in /Volumes/ so your normal hd (Mactintosh HD) is at /Volumes/Macintosh HD/

an external disc, named Lacie HD for instance would be at /Volumes/Lacie HD/
