Hiya,
I have some spare system available and I want to put it aside as a "SABnzb-Server". The basic question I ask myself now is - what plattform should I use Windows (Windows XP, Windows 7 or even Windows Server ) or Unix (preferably Ubuntu 10.10). My main focus is on fast downloads (have some 64 Mbit line) and I wonder which OS would serve as the most stable, reliable and performant plattform to run SABnzbd on. I intend to spend some 4 Gb RAM as memory and use my NAS as storage for the downloads.
So what plattform would be the best fit for SABnzbd
Thanks

Windows or Unix ???
Re: Windows or Unix ???
Not sure if there's an absolute best, but I enjoy sabnzbd on my media center (atom 1.6 dual, 2gb ram) with debian sid. rock stable, it's on 24/7 for months and its just there waiting for my orders
I guess the main problem with windows is the unnecessary use of a graphical environment consuming precious resources. Besides, sabnzbd works flawlessly with sickbeard, couchpotato and xbmc. But can't comment on this in windows environments

Re: Windows or Unix ???
Currently I have running all this on my NAS (Synology DS211j) and it is running fine - just not faster than about 16-20 MBit download. Since I have a 64 Mbit connection, I do hope that some faster machine will do it. Basically I feel home in the Windows world. On the other hand - Unix is also not all that tough and I would really make it dependant on what is better in terms of download speed or speed in general for the sabnzbd application. Since it is based on Python, I heard that it runs a bit faster on Windows machines, but I do not know if this is really the truth. So I don't know. Maybe I just install Windows Server 2008 R2 on the machine and use it also as a Domain Controller at home :-)
Well - let's see. Maybe the Guru will give me some advice. Actually I want to start working on it at the weekend ;-)

@UBDM
There's something wrong with your rig.
I'm running SAB+ 0.5.6 on a Seagate Dockstar.
My line is a FTTH 30Mb and I can pull 30Mb with SAB.
For the record, it runs plugbox linux which is just a flavor of Arch Linux for MIPS systems.
Are you by any chance connecting your Synology to the LAN only through WiFi?
If that's the case, then 16-20MB makes perfect sense. Start using Ethernet and I'm sure it'll boost it till 50Mb.
Cheers
