User "notes" feature

Post by wb »

Hi.
I've migrated from alt.binz to sabnzbd.
One feature that i miss from alt.binz is the built in "notes" feature.
This is even more important now that I can do most of my administration remotely through a browser.

It would be great to have a simple text entry area where I can take notes about things that is saved to the server so I can review and edit the notes regardless of where I'm currently located.

Thanks.

How would notes be directly related to the scope of SABnzbd? How would having notes saved within SABnzbd help you download things? What are you even using these notes *for*?

Hi, thanks for your response.
To answer your questions:
1. I'm not informed as to the scope of SABnzbd, so I can't comment on whether this feature would fall out of scope or not.
2. It helps to download things because you might become aware of something you'd like to download but can't locate an nzb for at the time you become aware of it. By making a note of the data you want and perhaps how you became aware of it, you have an easy way of being reminded to check again, next time you're looking for nzbs
3. I tend to use them as follows:
Say I read a post somewhere about something I want to download, lets say it's a demo for a new game. I go to an index site like nzbmatrix and search for an nzb for the demo but I can't find one. I'll make a note of the name of the 'release' and where I saw it. Next time I'm looking for nzb's I'll check my notes and search again for any that I couldn't find previously in case they have been posted in the mean time. When I find the nzb, or give up trying, I'll delete the item from the notes.

It could also be a place to record anything else pertinent to stuff being downloaded using sabnzbd. e.g. "album for grandma"...

I've found the feature in Alt.Binz to be useful but given that I've needed rdp access to administer it anyway, I might as well have just used notepad or something. Now that I can administer my client from anywhere using just a browser, it'd be great to have this feature built into the app.

I hope this helps you understand the reasons I posted the request.

Cheers.

I think it's too much outside the scope of SABnzbd.
It has no direct relation to downloading and post-processing.

It's more supportive of searching, which is not a part of SABnzbd.
AltBinz supports searching from within the program (if I remember correctly).
That's something we don't do.
Instead we promote using integration tools like browser add-ons (e.g. nzbdStatus) and
RSS feeds of indexers (like the bookmark feed from nzbmatrix.com).

I understand that it can be useful, but I can think of other useful things
which also have no place in SABnzbd.

Well, the thing is, SABnzbd isn't where you should be going first if you're going to go get NZBs. It would make more sense as something like a wishlist or reminder list at the indexing site where you're actually doing the searching.

OK, fair enough and thanks for the suggestions.
Pity because SABnzbd does everything else so much better than Alt.Binz.
I'll look for a browser extension to provide the kind of functionality I'm after.
Cheers.
