Hi All,

I have been using Newsbin Pro for a couple years and have recently come across SABnzbd+, CouchPotato, Sick Beard and xbmc. This has been a revelation to someone who previously used to manually search for every item (on a daily basis and catalogue them).

Having now got a fully working setup with the above programs, I have started to focus on my SABnzbd+ download speed. Having used Newsbin Pro and tweaked the settings to get the max speed possible on my line, I have tried to tweak the same settings in SABnzbd+ to get a similar speed that maxes out my line.

I have set my cache to 250MB, and have tried various settings for the number of connections (4-50) - both with and without SSL - and cannot get my download speed to increase above 500KB/s. With Newsbin Pro I would get a speed of 700-1000KB/s.

My PC Specs are top of the line - or were a year or two back: Core i7 980X extreme, 6GBTriple Channel DDR3 memory, 128GB SATA3 SSD, 300GB Velocraptor, 3x3TB Caviar Greens in RAID 0, GTX 470 1.25GB, ...

I have searched google, the SABnzbd+ wiki and this forum for all possible sugesstions and still have not found a resolution. I love SABnzbd, some of it's features just blow Newsbin Pro out of the water and would like to stick with it if at all possible. I'm hoping someone can help me out!

Hard to tell, you should be able to get about 10 MBytes/sec
from a 100Mbit/sec line. Well, I do with a lessee hardware spec.
Did you tell Norton to leave SABnzbd alone, including its administrative
folders and its "temporary download folder"?
SABnzbd will not likely overtake NewsbinPro, it has more overhead
due to being written in Python instead of C++.

I have not told Norton to leave sabnzbd and it's folders alone. Although I cannot see any connection prolems with the Norton firewall in the Norton history/logs. I will tell Norton to ignore the folders and report back.

I am running sabnzbd on windows 7. The wiki explains that one of the ways to increase download speeds is to use python yenc (c++). It also says that this will already be installed on a windows 7 pc.

If you use the binary distribution, this is true.

I assume you mean the binary distribution of python yenc? If so how can i ensure this is what i am using? The wiki needs amending in that case...

Yes, that is correct. I installed it using the win32 installer.

Any other suggestions?

EDIT: I didn't realise you could run it from the source code. I assume that it's just python scripts?

You could do some testing on different disks, HD vs SSD.
But it shouldn't matter.
BTW: RAID 0, is that a typo?

I guess I could do some hdd vs ssd tests, but I would have thought that settings the cache at 250MB would have rendered this particular issue redundant?

Nope, raid 0 was not a typo. When I was thinking of putting together my new computer, I had 80% of my media collection on a combination of CDs, DVDs and Blu-Ray Discs. I was getting really frustrated about having to hunt around for discs if I wanted to watch an archived movie etc and was testing different methods of cataloging the discs to make the hunt for a particular movie easier/quicker. Since I was buying a new computer, I decided to kill two birds with one stone and bought a full tower case for my new computer that could also accommodate a few extra hard disks to use as my media storage. Since the biggest hard disks available at the time (and even now) were/are 3TB, I decided to get three if these and join them using raid 0. I had read on Western Digital's website that their caviar green range were intended for 'consumer raid applications' and so bought three 3TB caviar greens for my media storage.

I intend on buying a whole new pc and media storage 'solution' (bigger hdds in raid 0? NAS? Server?) when the next intel CPU range is released. Hopefully this will coincide with the launch of new higher capacity hdds (5TB+).


Btw, I would have thought that sabnzbd would run faster than or at least as fast as newsbin pro as both use c++ binaries?

EDIT: I have just read the thread about the virgin media users in the UK and how their traffic is throttled on ports 119 and 563. I will try to switch my port to 443 + SSL and report back on any changes in speed (if any).

EDIT 2: I have switched the port to 443 and also tried changing the number of connections as well. No dice.
