Server Configuration

Post by enigma_01 »

I'm quite new to Usenet, in fact I still havent used it yet so please excuse my ignorance.

In the server configuration tab, what do I enter in the different fields (host, Port, etc)? Is there a list of servers somewhere that I can sign up to? Are any ones recommended better than others for different types of files?

I tried to do a brief search on here for "server configuration" but could not find the info I was looking for so any assistance would be appreciated :)

Your going to need a news server. There are free ones available but I use http://www.giganews.com/. They have a free trial available here https://secure.giganews.com/signup/

They have a great introduction to all of this http://www.giganews.com/usenet-university/

thanks again, what are the differences between the free and commercial ones? Do they all link into the same content or does each have its own stand alone content?

Each provider chooses which groups to provide. Most free providers carry text only newsgroups but if your lucky you may find a free provider with binarys to download.

In general commercial providers have longer retention and carry the binary newsgroups too.

In my (limited) knowledge i think that newsgroup providers 'link' to the same content but they can also add there own groups in there too. (although in my experience these tend to be text only for support and announcement type stuff)

cool, thanks shoo, well will try and have a look at the trial one over the next week or so :) By binaries do you mean, movies, music, programs etc? The free ones generally don't have this content?

and if you do hear of any reviews of different servers would be great to let me know.

I recommend reading up a bit more on what usenet is, it will likely help fix some misconceptions you have. Try these links:
