Help: Sabnzbd crashing on MAC 10.6.2 Snow Leopard

Post by mojo »

Hi, well I am using a mac  2x 2.26 Ghz Mac Pro, i am having this problem that when ever there is a file that seems to be incomplete or for what ever reason will not download, it just gives me the rainbow colored spinning ball and nothing else.. I have tried to open another window in Safari or Firefoxs, and just to try to connect to Google.com and it will not connect .. it is just dead, can not do anything.. can open mail and such but anything with firefox or safari, when NZB crashes.. well I have to restart.. everytime.. I tired the same files on ( Which sucks big time) Unison, and Unison give the error, when it crashes .. STALLED.. these are both on mac.  Now when I usa SABNZBD on Windows 7 ( NOT MY THING) :0)  if the file does not download, it will only give me an error on the completed parts of the screen saying failed.. and it will continue to download the other files in the que.. but on mac it is jut stuck, and will not contiune until I restart and then it might crash again right after a restart. anyone else having this problem?

Would be glad for any help . I have tried this with Beta 6, as well as the stable release.. and it is always the same.. some files download others, crash the whole application.. what to do..

thanks to anyone who can help or any suggestions.. :)

Was any resolution found for this? I'm running into the same thing

as soon as a download starts my mac gets completely locked up, and only a restart will resolve

Which resolution?
This is very very rarely reported by anyone else,
so the suspicion quickly is that it has something to with hardware or other software.
Other than that, which SABnzbd version do you use?

I am seeing this issue on an intel 10.6 mac and ppc 10.5, running 0.7.3 of sabnzbd, this happens without any other apps running, downloading to a local temp dir.

Almost immediately after a download starts it crashes sab and then locks up the whole machine ... all networking functionality drops and the machines need to be physically restarted.

pings to these machines fail as well until a reboot - returning host is down

You are using the (snow)Leopard build and not the Lion/MountainLion one?
If an app crashes the OS so severe, I'd get suspicious of the system itself.
Nothing of this kind has been reported and I've never seen this behaviour on my own test system,
despite running plenty of buggy versions.
Crashes have been reported, but that involved only SABnzbd itself.

This may all sound like "blame the victim" and I would probably feel the same if I had this complaint,
but given the above, I wouldn't know what to look for.
Is there anything useful in the OSX's own logging? Crash report?

I'm seeing this on 10.6 and 10.5, I have two machines, and each are failing the same way.

History:

Setup up SABNZDB on a an iBook ppc running 10.5 - Sab version 0.6.15
- on this machine sickbeard is installed as well - *** I can reproduce this issue with or without sickbeard running though

This was running fine, and then started to crash/hang/lockup like this - rarely a restart would cause the DL to resume and complete, and one or two DLs may go through, but then we'll see this soon (largest files are approx 2 GB)

As this was very frustrating I shut this system down, and installed Sab version 0.7.3 onto a mac mini (intel duo core) running 10.6.

This ran for a few days, much better than on the pcc, but then SAB again started to crash/hang the same way making using SAB useless and extremely frustrating.

It does not matter if a file is already in queue and had some progress (crashed and had to restart), or if a new file is added (manually or via sickbeard)

I've limited DL speed, and changed DL location ... nothing seems to help

Now everytime I start SABNZBD, on either machine, moments after the DL starts it locks up the entire machine, and then leads to what appears to be a full system hang.

nothing crashes and creates a report, everything just hangs - I don't see anything in console, but that could be me

Is there specific logging I can enable to assist here? or a specific log I'm not looking at?

I understand that you may have not seen exactly what I am describing, but am having a hard time accepting system fault as I am seeing this exact same behavior on two different systems with little in common ...

This very well could be user error, but I'm at a loss on how to resolve on my own, or find any info to further my investigation

What info can I provide to assist? again, it was working very well ... and then seemed to just start to crap out
... in between working there was no power outage, system updates, changes made, etc.. Working downloads that were completing at an avg of 3.7 MB/sec are now just making it a couple of MBs and then I see this issue.

I did install both 2.7 and 3.2 version of python .. could that cause this? that said, it was working originally with this config and just started to choke ... it appeared to work long on the ppc, as I only got a few days on the intel mac mini

Any help is appreciated, I'm getting close to the end of my rope this is very frustrating!!!!

The other Pythons shouldn't make a difference, although we did see some interference
when using the older ActiveState Python builds on Lion. But that was very black & white.
SABnzbd builds are stand-alone or as stand-alone as OSX allows for.
Was an alternative Python installed on the PPC system as well?

You can try to set a speed limit below your max line speed (it's in kBytes/sec).
A permanent limit is set in Config->General. The one on the queue page is temporary.

Another thing you can try is to download and unpack the tar.gz distribution file (not the osx.tar.gz).
Pick the default native python version and do a "sudo easy_install cheetah" from Terminal.
After that you should be able to start the SABnzbd.py file from Terminal.
You won't get the top menu icon, but the rest should just work.
Possibly this will give you more info.

yes, I did have both versions installed on both mac - 3.2 was installed first and then 2.7

my line speed max is 30 Mbps, changing these settings, even on the temp setting on main page to 1500 Kbps still causes the hang ... do you believe this to be a speed issue?

I will try the steps you've suggested here, but is there not any logging we can do so that if this does not help we can move forward, or am I at a stage where if this doesn't work I'm sol?

I don't know if it's a speed problem, but it's worth a try.
1500 is 1500KBytes/sec, which is 15Mbps.
(Clumsy, we will later switch to a percentage instead).
You might try lowering it until it's not a problem, if at all.

There's one other thing that may kill a SABnzbd session.
High frequency calls to the API or hyper activity from its own web browser UI.
API calls are logged in SABnzbd's own logfile of you set the level to "Debug" on the Status page.
A bug in the web ui that would cause high frequency calls is not visible in the log,
but can be eliminated by closing all browser tabs interfacing with SABnzbd.
You don't have other third-party utilities (except SickBeard) or browser plugins?

Thanks, I'll limit to 1500 while performing the tests you've given.

If I set the log to debug how do I review when it hangs? can I pipe to a file on the desktop to review upon hang? or am I limited to waiting for the app to successfully start again?

it there a log file I can watch in terminal?

I do not have any 3rd party apps, other other utilities other than sickbeard.

The first test I will attempt in DL'ing with the browser closed.

Run SABnzbd from a Terminal window like this:

Code: Select all

/Applications/SABnzbd.app/Content/MacOS/SABnzbd --console -l2
That's a lowercase L.
Don't try to ^C it from the Terminal app, but use the top menu icon or the web browser.
