Sick Beard (or CouchPotato, even): Coupla Stoopid Questions

Post by DekeDirt »

I only keep up with about four or five active television shows and doing so isn't exactly exerting an overwhelming amount mental pressure on me; but, I've read enough praises of Sick Beard sung on forums/sites to pique my curiosity and this has elicited a couple of questions; and, I'm hoping someone knowledgeable would be gracious enough to answer:

1. If I'm only keeping up with five active TV shows, would Sick Beard be overkill?
I don't really care about the extra bullshit like creating cover images and crap like that. I mean, if I determined that I'd like to have Sick Beard, I would use the extra features but it's not like I feel deprived without them.

2. Do I need to have my computer running 24/7 to get the most out of Sick Beard?
I don't and I'm not really inclined to start, unless some huge advantage is revealed to me.

3. If my preferred format is .mkv, I'm assuming Sick Beard will not automatically de-mux or mux or otherwise spit out a format my PS3 can read -- if it won't, then is there really any point?

Thanks for reading, hope you can help!

No de-mixing etc. just renames the downloaded and extracted file according to your preferred naming convention.

Not over-kill... It just downloads without user intervention, and sometimes finds that release you didn't even know was due to aire yet.

It is designed as a server so to speak, and certainly is stable for 24/7 operations. I know many people running QNAP NAS have reported using cron-jobs and start-stop schedules etc without issue to SickBeard, so you could have it run for x hours each day, or run morning and evening etc as you desire. Worst that will happen here is that it might get a show 12 hours after it airs instead of getting it within a few hours ;)

Same for CouchPotato... It is great for constant running, but since you specify the time of day for it to perform its searches etc (or the frequency of searches) so long as it was running at the time of the scheduled search, all should be good... Again, there are a lot of features, but even just the consistent renaming and automatic downloading of a few movies is valuable in my opinion and would not be over-kill.

Worst-case scenario is that you try it, and find it doesn't add huge benefit to you, so you disable or remove it.

I have my own stupid question, figured Id just hop onto this thread... How do you upgrade SickBeard on a Mac OSX 10.5.8 device? The Force Version Check thing doesnt work so does it have to be done manually? Can anyone walk me through the steps, or is this still valid:
