speeds limited on drobo 5n

Post by dbone »

Hi -

I'm running sabnzbd+ on my drobo 5n, configured with 5 4TB drives. Latest git from master:
Fetch URL: git://github.com/sabnzbd/sabnzbd.git
HEAD branch: master
Latest commit 2eed355e9ccc836d10fac83a904aa94939b3ac46
Author: shypike <[email protected]>
Date: Mon Nov 11 20:24:11 2013 +0100

I have a 250 megabit connection, with real-world speeds of at least 120mbit . On OSX, sabnzbd+ (with the same server configuration) sustains speeds of over 15MB/sec. When running on my Drobo 5N (with the same servers), the best it can manage is 4.0MB/sec, usually around 3.5. I've tried setting an article cache to 64M and 128M, sticking a small mSATA SSD in the accelerator bay, playing with the number of connections to each server, and nothing seems to help. It still seems to be limited to 4.0MB/sec.

Any other ideas I can try?

Thanks

The problem is the CPU in your drobo 5n. Drobo is a bit secretive about it, but it appears to be a dual/quad core ARM CPU ... which has a fraction of the power of a current Intel i3/i5/i7 CPU.

A few days ago, someone has posted the SABnzbd speed with other ARM platforms, so you can compare with that.

EDIT: here it is: http://forums.sabnzbd.org/viewtopic.php ... 88&#p89988

So SAB speeds on other ARM systems:

Cubieboard 2 (dual core A8, SATA, 4GB Nand, $59) - 3.6Mb/s down; 1 min per 1Gb unrar
BBB (A8, 2GB Nand, $45) - 3.0Mb/s down; 4-5 min per 1GB unrar
RPi Model B (A6, $35) - 1.2Mb/s down; 5-6 min per 1GB unrar -

If you want high-speed downloads on low-spec hardware (read: low spec CPU and/or low RAM), you're better off with nzbget instead of SABnzbd.
