For what it's worth...
I've got an older laptop with a 2gz single-core Intel Pentium M processor and 1GB of RAM. I found when it has XBMC running on it, it's basically out of memory, and as such, does a boatload of memory paging to the hard-drive. This can make the unpacking process take upwards of 24 hours for a 4GB movie, whereas, if I close xbmc, suddenly it takes a few minutes.
I know this doesn't apply directly to the discussion here, but hopefully it's of some use to some out there.
