Download speed

Post by rutts35 »

Hi. Newbie question.
Windows seven PC. Supernews usenet group. Virgin broadband 10meg connection. Using port 443 ssl.
when I first start to download I get 1.2MB (which I know for some is slow but, I'm happy with). Then after a while it drops off to 300MB. I've tried changing ports but when I do nothing downloads. I thought at first this might be throttling as I was downloading at the weekend but I get this any time off the week.Any suggestions?

Thanks

Probably traffic shaping by your ISP.

What is 'traffic shaping'? I take it there is nothing I can do to avoid this?

This means that your ISP will throttle your speed after a while,
often for specific protocols like NNTP and Torrent.
Virgin doesn't have a very good reputation in this aspect.

Oh right throttling. Didn't realise it was the same thing. I thought this was carried out at certian times ie peak times? This is happening anytime I download.

Ignore the above. Thanks for the link. I now see the times I can download without problesm. Now I've read it, it all makes sense.

thanks again
