As Virgin Media users of Newzbin2 have probably noticed, Virgin has started blocking access to Newzbin2.es

So now my bookmarks, and SABTAB Greasmonkey scripts to directly give SABNZBD nzb files, have stopped working as SABNZBD cannot access Newzbin without the VPN

I can of course, connect to Newzbin using a VPN, but I don't want to download from Giganews using the VPN and I don't want to leave the VPN connected all the time

Any suggestions on how to make the bookmarks work again ?

I'm looking into the possiblilty of using the newzbin_url special config in the newer versions of SAB.

I've asked for confirmation of the syntax, Once that has been done it should allow it to work via a web proxy URL, meaning no VPN's etc to get onto newzbin2.es

So you have a VPN available? Can you just route the Newzbin2.es over the VPN, and all other traffic over your normal default interface? If you use Linux, I could help.

EDIT: out of curiosity: what kind of VPN have you got: provider, price, type of VPN?

I use VyprVPN as provided by Giganews.

http://www.giganews.com/vyprvpn/ ... Wow! A newsprovider providing VPNs ... I didn't that was already there. Question: why don't you want all (news)traffic to go through that VPN? It's meant for it, isn't it?

Anyway:

On OSX, hopefully "netstat -nr" will show the routing table. I think you should see two defaults: your VPN, and your normal gateway. I believe on OSX, the first default is chosen.

If you dare to change your routing table, this quote could help:

xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx = the ip you want to change the route to.
yyy.yyy.yyy.yyy = the gateway of the connection you want xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx to route through.

sbin/route -n add -net xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx yyy.yyy.yyy.yyy


So if you want 12.12.12.4 to route through your ppp connection with the gateway of 192.168.0.1 you would type: /sbin/route -n add 12.12.12.4 192.168.0.1

If you reboot, your going to have to re add the route.

I don't use it for all traffic as it's quite slow compared to not using it - 5MB vs 100MB

I am using OS X/FreeBSD with SABnzbd and have read up on how to circumvent the cleanfeed block by Virgin and am using now OpenVPN on a virtualised server.
I found a useful tip on serverfault http://serverfault.com/questions/66222/ ... domains-ip that showed me the rule I needed to push to my clients:
push "route 85.112.165.88 255.255.255.0"
This should - together with a TAP interface configuration - get you the desired effect: only newzinb2 traffic goes through the VPN, nothing else. Added bonus of this is, that it can be used in as many platforms that OpenVPN supports.

PS: for Virgin customers http://help.virginmedia.com/system/self ... TYPE=Cable gives usenet settings on the 7 day retention service run by Virgin.

Just found this out, virgin are complete arse holes. not happy, not to find alternative ips :/

I have been frustrated by the entire Block of Newzbin2 and have found a workable solution.
The trick is to setup a VPN & route only the traffic going to newzbin2.es through it otherwise your D/L speeds will suffer.

I am running a dedicated Virtual Machine for SAB but this should work on any Vista / 7 machine.

First, set-up your VPN connection on the machine running SAB, I am using the windows add network wizard in, Network & Sharing Centre > Set Up a New Connection > Connect to a workplace > VPN. & using the details from http://www.bestukvpn.com

Once added Disconnect the VPN & go to. Network Connections > "Your VPN Adapter" properties > Networking > now disable IPV6 then > Properties IPV4 > Advanced > Untick "Use default gateway on remote network" OK and save everything.

Now reconnect your VPN, all traffic should go through your normal LAN but you now have a vpn to route newZbin through. So next step

open an elevated command prompt by pressing the windows key and typing "CMD" when the CMD program pops up in the start menu right click it and run as an administrator.

you need to enter the following > route add "newzbin2 IP address" mask 255.255.255.255 "VPN IP address"

so it would probably look like this....

route add 85.112.165.88 mask 255.255.255.255 10.88.0.236

now SAB should be able to read your bookmarks !

please be aware this last step would need re-applying if you reboot your computer. it can be made permanent but you will need to look that up for yourself. i am also unsure of exactly how DNS is being handled, it may be going through the VPN but it works ok.

I also accept no responsibility for any issues this procedure may cause you however remote the chance is!
