Unpacking VERY slow

Running the latest version of SABNZBD on my Mac mini with OSX 10.8.2 after running it a few years from my Windows server. All runs smooth but awfully slow! I down with 120 mbit but a 10gb video file is taking about 5-6 hours to unpack. In the meantime my local SSD gets full since the unpacking to my NAS takes ages.

The networkspeed is no issue since I run NFS on a gbit network. The CPU is 100% loaded while unpacking as well. But something is not right and I cannot get it figured.. When I google the issue, I do not get to find much info that helps me further so it must be something local in my setup.

What is the speed if you save locally on your built in hard disc, and not NFS?

Getest maar geen verschil, naar local SSD duurt het net zo extreem lang.

Dit zijn mijn SABNZBD switches:

Can you post a screendump of the Config -> Folder page ... making sure everything points to your local disk (and not your NAS)?

See below, please note that I tested with a 'local' category that points to a local folder as well.

Unpacking speed is completely determined by the unrar tool, we have no influence on it.
The complaint is not new though, it seems that on some systems unrar is just very slow.

What happens when you type "unrar" on the command line?

Command unkown

If I understand correctly, a rar tool is provided with the sabnzbd install but is third party? I would love to know how I can re-install or upgrade this tool.

SABnzbd for OSX already contains a recent version of unrar.
But unrar is a commercial (but free-of-charge) tool over which we have no influence.

I'm running sabnzdb 0.7.5 on a Mac Mini Server Core 2 Duo. Everything worked fine until I updated to Mac OS 10.8.2
Using the contained unrar post processing is EXTREME slow now. Although system resources are fine (10% CPU usage, 45% RAM and plenty of disk space) post processing slows the system down to a point where it's not responding.

Turning post processing off (»Enable unrar« = false) and using a tool like »UnrarX« everything is back to normal.
What version of unrar is sabnzbd using and how can I change that? Seems like there are some unrar vs. 10.8.2 issues!

Thanks for your help! O0

My problem was solved last weekend by a complete reinstall of OSX, starting from blanc. Spend two weeks on identifying the issue and gave up.

Hey folks,
after I realized that the problem persists, I think I've discovered the cause of the error (in my case). In the console there was the following entry again and again:

FireWire (OHCI) Lucent ID 5901 built-in: 52 bus resets in last 3 minutes.
FireWire (OHCI) Lucent ID 5901 built-in: 49 bus resets in last 3 minutes.
and so on...

This makes disk access itself extremely slow.
Interestingly, the error is fixed for a short time by connecting an external Firewire hard drive, but after a while, disk access (and hereby the system) is incredibly slow again.
I had hoped to avoid a reinstall. But now it seems inevitable. ???

I'm having the same problem as the Op. same system, too. I bought it second hand, and it already had snow leopard on it, and before installing sab I upgraded to mountain lion, and unpacking is horrendously slow, but so is copying anything from my NAS. Copying to is fine, but copying from... It just gets stuck on "Preparing to Copy". Possibly all part of the same problem, but I can live with that as long as I can get it to unpack.

Unfortunately I don't have a disc to reload from scratch. I've tried making my own boot key drive with mountain lion, which works but it has the same problem with unpacking. I've tried to reinstall snow leopard but now I get an error about "OSX can't be installed on this machine" so I am now well and truly stuck.

Is there an alternative to unrar that can be used? It still needs to be an automatic process.

Any ideas?

Thanks

From what I read from your message, the slow unrar is a symptom and not a cause.
Replacing unrar is not the solution.
One thing you can do is unrar to the local drive and then copy the result over to the external drive,
using a user script.
Although it would not surprise me that this will be equally slow.
