Download speeds

Post by skar »

Good morning,

I'm currently trying to get to the bottom of variation in download speeds I am getting.

So at the moment I am using

SABnzbd 0.7.7
Python 2.7.3-4
Running on Synology DSM 4.1 2661 (DS411+ Atom D510 1GB)
Using 6 connections, with SABnzbd memory set to 250M
Currently getting 3.5 MBs, from a possible 6.7MBs, with a CPU usage in the region of 20 - 25%.

The thing is this is after a restart of application, when I was running 10 connection and getting 1.2MBs and cpu usage was around 3 - 4 % for the python, it just seems performance can vary quite alot. I appreciate we have the vagaries of the internet to contend with, but just looking for some advice on things to look for that may affect things, which are within my control.

As always thanks for any information.

I have a 100Mbit/sec internet connection (fibre).
With an older Atom-based Linux server I get about 6 Mbyte/sec when I use Supernews exclusively.
I have tried my NetGear ReadyNas (Atom) once and got about 7 Mbyte/sec.
Adding Astranet usually brings down the speed a bit.
On anything faster, (miniMac, PC) I can easily max out my internet connection (10-11 Mbyte/sec).
There's a fine balance between the number of connections, Usenet server and speed of the system.
You'll have to experiment a bit.

Thanks,

I will try to do some more testing and just try to get a feel for the right balance. It was just when it was running at 1 - 1.8 MB for a couple of hours on morning this week, did I think... mmmm something wasn't quite right. The previous day it was running at 4.8MB. The trouble is, I've only been running SABnzbd for abour 5 days now and so really don't have a very good feel for performance and what is a reasonable expectation. It was just the drop from 4.8 to 1.8MBs had me concerned that I had "Played" around too much and unwittingly fubared something.

The old adage of running before walking ;)

What I also see is that older material (say over 400 days) often comes in slower.
Probably caused by not being on the front-end servers.
