Computer freezing up think it's HDD access. (Windows XP)

I often use my computer whilst I am downloading stuff and when it goes to verify and extract everything grinds to a halt, so I'm assuming this is my HDD being whored by SAB, I just read up that Windows XP is no good at realising what needs access more and this is why it's grinding everything else to a halt, I was thinking if I change my temporary file area to my secondary HDD (250gb SATA with nothing on it) would that speed the computer up when it finishes DLing? Or would it just slow down when it moves stuff to the C drive after it's done, thanks. Would love to know the process it does with moving folders.

It's beneficial to have two hard disks and have the "incomplete" stuff on one hard disk
and the "complete" stiff on the other.
Most jobs need unrar-ring and this works better from one drive to another.
If you have a multi-core CPU, maybe you should check the par2 parameters
on the Config->Switches page.
The possible values are:
-t- : Use it single-core
-t0 : Use multi-core for repairs but not for verify (prevents disk trashing)
-t+ : Always use multi-core
You should pick -t0, because the default value (-t+) will increase the load on the hard disk.

I have a Q9550 overclocked to 3.8ghz.
-t0 : Use multi-core for repairs but not for verify (prevents disk trashing)
So I should use this and have incompletes on my secondary HDD, would that be the most optimal route? I'll set that up now and wait for a reply
EDIT: Also I have sab boot on startup and I like it to not open my browser and when I restarted just now it opened my browser so I just wanted to check my start line was correct.
"C:\Program Files\SABnzbd\SABnzbd.exe" -b -t0
Will that make it boot up with the optimization that was just said and make it so my firefox doesn't open too? Thanks a lot.

You need to change settings in the Config->Switches page!
The command line is primarily for Linux users or people using
embedded systems (like NAS etc.) who need to adjust settings
before they have a web-ui.
The options are explained here:
http://sabnzbd.wikidot.com/configure-switches
You need the options:
Launch browser on startup : No
Extra PAR2 parameters : -t0

Thanks a lot, that worked, for some reason when I booted up with the command line it wouldn't find plush, so I had to copy the file and rename the copied one to 0 and then it found plush.. But I can download and extract stuff whilst watching HD stuff and playing PSX emulator. Thanks a lot this has helped massively.

The -t commandline option is for changing skins
You told it to use skin "0", so it will fall back to Default.
