tick optional only in the main server only or in both?

I have backup ticked only in my secondary server which i assume is right?

I have been running 2 servers for a few months and i didn't have optional set all this time, would i be correct in assuming that he program wouldn't have ever been using the backup server if that's the case?
if so i may not need to renew my fee to it as i always assumed it was in use but maybe not if i had to have had optional ticked?

any advice would be welcomed

Use "optional for unreliable servers (typically free ones) that will delay
downloading because SABnznbd has to wait long for them to timeout.
When such a server causes too many timeouts its ignored for 10 minutes.

Backup servers are only used when primary servers don't have articles.

The two concepts are unrelated.
