Hey Guys -
I need your suggestions please...
As most on here, I currently use the standard usenet apps like Sonarr, SABnzbd, CouchPotato, Headphones, etc... I've been doing so for a while and have built quite a collection. Currently, I store all media on a single 26gb+ partition on my home server which is made up of 10 drives (9 sata & 1 SSD) linked together using Stablebit DrivePool. I play my media locally on my TV using Kodi (XBMC) and sometimes use Plex when not at home or mobile.
Due to the hardware required to maintain it, each time I add space it costs more and more as additional equipment is required. Recently, I even had to upgrade to a 1000W power supply just to keep everything happy. Also, nothing is backed up.
I use torrents as well as usenet and currently have a seedbox which is located in France that downloads torrent media then syncs it to my local server using BTSync. Once synced, Sonarr or another ap grabs the media, tags it, moves it, and deletes it.
The other day I had an idea. Why not buy cloud-based storage to store everything in? Ideally, it would be great to have the space on my Seedbox, but even their highest tier plan only offers 1tb. I could use Dropbox, Google Drive, etc; but I don't think they would work. Below are the features which would be required to work:
- Plenty of online storage (no need for local sync)
- FTP / SFTP access to transfer media
- Offer some type of connection which media may easily access & stream from (using Kodi (XBMC) and/or Plex) (Probably be able to map drive to)
- OR - Be able to install these apps and run them local to the stored media
- Not run into DCMA or similar issues if any media is found I don't have license for
Given all the above, you can see why Dropbox or similar options wouldn't work for a few reasons. I found a site called StreamNation today which is a start, but they still don't seem to fit all the requirements. So, I decided to post here to see if anyone had suggestions.
Any ideas? Thanks!
Suggestions: Storing & Streaming Media in the Cloud
Re: Suggestions: Storing & Streaming Media in the Cloud
Personally, I think cloud storage solutions are great but my experience in the cloud storage is only in the Enterprise business world and it's far from cheap. On my home network I run a large rack mounted 4U linux server that fills the role as my file server, DHPC server, along with running SAB, Sickbeard, CouchPotato, Plex all on one box and I do occasionally stream media from Plex when I'm away from home on my phone or iPad but my issue is my internet. I've got a 100Mbps internet connection but my upload speed is only 5Mbps and I"ve got nearly 7TB's of data currently and I sometimes download 200-300GB's in a single day so until Google Fiber comes to my city (probably never) it's just not a viable option for me. My connection would never get a break trying to upload everything though
Of course, If you've got the connection, the company I'd probably look at was called StreamNation which offers exactly what you're asking for and they advertise their selves as a Dropbox/Google Drive type of service specifically for you to upload movies and TV shows to and then stream them back later to other devices. They offer an unlimited storage account with unlimited bandwidth for like $20-30 a month. Do some googling and read about them. Maybe things may have changed but there was a few things I had issues with and I also have many questions. No clue about how well the intergration would be with all my current apps, or can Kodi and Plex stream directly from it etc. They offer a free package with like 10-20GBs and free bandwidth so you may want to test it first.
