Sabnzb and AVG Firewall :(

Jebus Christ I think I'm going insane!  :'(
I can't figure out how to allow sabnzb through this firewall. I have set the
application action to allow all for SABnzbd.exe but somehow I get this everytime:
Welcome to SABnzbd.exe 0.4.11

SABnzbd needs a free tcp/ip port for its internal web server.
Port 8080 on localhost was tried , but it is not available.
Some other software uses the port or SABnzbd is already running.

Please restart SABnzbd with a different port number.

Press Startkey+R and type the line (example):
        "C:\Program Files (x86)\SABnzbd\SABnzbd.exe" --server localhost:8081

If you get this error message again, please try a different number.

Program did not start!

Firefox has the same action to allow all and works fine except with sabnzb. I have googled
my eyes out trying to find a guide or an answer but nothing....

please help  :-*

Version: 0.4.11
OS: Windows 7 x64
Install-type: Windows Installer
Firewall Software: AVG Antivirus plus Firewall
Are you using IPV6? no

Firewalls are supposed to be invisible for applications that are allowed to communicate.
As far as applications are concerned, the firewall does not exist.

Somehow AVG doesn't seem to obey this rule of invisibility.
I assume you have checked AVG's firewall rules?
Do you use "localhost" (SABnzbd is only accessible within your own computer)
or something else (allowing other computers to access SABnzbd's web interface)?
Have you considered complaining to AVG too?

SABnzbd has been tested with the internal Windows firewall and with Comodo.

Yeah I use localhost.
I've been reading through AVGs faq and followed the instructions but I can't even get
Windows 7 homegroup to work between my desktop and laptop (unless I turn the firewall off  :-\) so maybe
this shit is too advanced for me.
I only have a trial version of AVG so far so I don't think I can get support from them.  :(
If I can't get it to work can yo recommend some other security suite which works better with Windows 7
and SABnzb?

I don't use a security suite myself.
I run free AVG anti-virus on Win7 and McAfee 8.3 on my XP system.
and only the built-in Windows firewall.
I have used Comodo for some time,  it works with SABnzbd.
In the end I threw it out again, just too much warnings for perfectly legitimate traffic.

BTW: I'm what you could call an "advanced user", I cannot imagine that anyone
with just a superficial PC knowledge is capable of giving the right answer
to all the warnings that these firewalls keep giving.
There's a serious usability problem with all of these suites.
The anti-virus programs are relatively easy (apart from performance issues).

Ok, thanks for the help shypike.
I will consider to remove AVGs firewall and use the built-in one instead.

Rule based firewalls FTW!
Personally I use look'n'stop, but there are more. Corporate firewalls are also totally rulebased, and I've used them before.
With coporate FW's there are some unused features like advanced user groups to log in to the firewall settings, lots of local networking and all sorts, but it also eliminated those crap warnings. Somewhat curiously, it was also easier to add new rules in, for example, Kerio Winroute than in Look'N'Stop

Sorry to go offtopic, though the OP could also use this information, it seems.

That wasn't the issue.
It's that most firewalls are just to complicated for the average user.
Who's going to setup rules for my neighbor's firewall (hint: not me).

I'm not sure if this is intentional or not shypike, but your posts shit me.

I wasn't trying to help your neighbour, /or/ suggesting you help them out.
I didn't even TRY to touch on the fact that firewalls are difficult to use/setup/configure. I agree 100%

All I was trying to say said was that you (as an advanced user) might want to try a rule based firewall if you want all the protectey goodness of a firewall, without the annoying popups.
Hey, maybe you don't want a firewall at all because you have a router- good on you!

Again, sorry to go offtopic and I'm done with this thread :)

Nothing to be sorry about.
I did not interpret it as being advise to me  ;D
Did not read it carefully enough, sorry.
Advise appreciated, I hadn't heard of look'n'stop before.
