Hi,

Will SAB recognize if I use a Usenet program like Unison on the MAC for browsing and lower the used connections or will there be problems with the max connections and stallings in both programs?

SABnzbd uses however many connections you tell it to. Same goes for Unison. So split your connections between them, most hosts give you more than enough connections to saturate your downstream, so if you're given 20 connections, give SABnzbd 10 and Unison 10. It'll work fine then.

wouldn’t it be nice if SAB would reduce and augment the connections according to programms running? It could reduce the connections if Unison is running. Feature request?

I'm not sure this would be possible, since we can't know what other usenet applications you may be running, can't know how many connections you're using, can't know how many connections you're permitted to use, etc. It's much easier and reliable to just let users handle that. It's very simple, as I mentioned earlier, divide the number of connections you're given by the number of clients you want to be able to use it simultaneously.

Just give it a thought, if you enter the program in a field SAB could check for it and lower the connections. If its alone it could work on max power. Setting it manually every time is not an option for most users. They will set the programs as you mentioned 10/10 or whatever and not use full connection most of the time.

I'm not sure this would be worth it. First, trying to use multiple newsreaders simultaneously isn't a common use-case. Most people have abandoned newsreaders that browse Usenet altogether, in favor of web-based indexers and nzb readers like SABnzbd. Secondly, we shouldn't be expected to control the settings of external applications, so even if we made SABnzbd magically auto-sense how many connections it should use, you'd still have to manually set up your other newsreader to use an appropriate number of connections.

And finally, for most peoples connections, SABnzbd should be able to max out your downstream regardless of if it's using 20, 10, or even 4-5 connections. So unless you're expecting 100mbit speeds, if you're planning on ever using more than one newsreader at once, you should be able to safely set your newsreaders to each use (total connections) / (number of newsreaders) and still max out your downstream regardless of if you're using just SABnzbd, just something-else, or both simultaneously. Since it's only a one-time setup thing, there's no real reason to make it an "auto-sensing" feature.

SABnzbd does try to automate as much of the Usenet process as is possible, but I don't think we want to get into the business of guessing server settings, especially settings that can be finicky and take awhile to resolve themselves like "Too Many Connection" errors.

Yeah you are right its not that important. Just thought it would be a nice idea for people using SAB and still browsing directly sometimes with other programs. They could have all connections for the software they use. Thats all, its not magical to see if a process is running or not. SAB itself is magical as it really works great. Thanks for that!

If you're just browsing for an image or two, this shouldn't really matter.

If you're suddenly downloading 6GB's worth of stuff in Unison, you might consider getting a reader that supports exporting to .nzb file and simply drop that file in your sab watchfolder.
