I posted this some time ago over in 'general discussion' but i'm guessing it needed to go here so......any suggestions would be appreciated.

My own Windows system is able to get to 11 MByte/second over a 100MBit fiber connection.
This is the maximum.
I cant understand where mine is slowing down.
Ive tried setting the cache to 120.
Lowered connections from 50 down as low as 8 where the max speed went from 7.6MB/s down to 2.2MB/s.
It's now set to 40 where it's improved, but still limited to around 6 or 7MB/s max.
On RapidShare i get 11MB/s occasionally 9-10MB/ on average though.
Here is my connection

SAB is running on W7 32 Ult , C2D E6750 @2.66GHz and 4.0GB RAM
Any ideas ?? (have read and re-read the wiki manual btw.

I am guessing one of the following applies:
(a) there are too many variables for an accurate answer to be given.
(b) way too many speed related threads have been posted in this forum for people to care any more.
(c) I've asked for help in the wrong place.
(d) I am a complete moron and have made a fundamental error somewhere..
(e) people actually have lives outside of this forum
(f) all of the above
anyway, thanks.

There are indeed many factors.
First SABnznd is no speed king, but it's performance is normally quite stable,
expect in the case of huge queues and very large amounts of servers/connections/
ISPs matter a great deal. Many US ones have traffic shaping.
Your Usenet provider is an important factor, pick the right server (US vs. EU)
and the optimal amount of connections.
Don't use a wireless connection.
Which Usenet provider do you use?

Thanks shypike,
I use Astraweb + news.readfreenews.net as a free backup.
Astraweb give me 3 servers, so i use the default one as the primary and EU an US as backups too.... all via SSL
I currently have it set to 40 connections as any thing less slowed my speed down considerably.
I am running SABnzbd Version: 0.5.6 all via Ethernet.
Best speed i have seen on SAB is about 7.8MB/s and on RapidShare 11MB/s
Happy, just trying to maximise. I am in Aus btw.

Lately, we've seen several reports about the uneven performance of AstraWeb.
That doesn't necessarily put SABnzbd off the hook.
You can do a test with another Usenet client to find out.

Yer, i've been reading the similar reports.
I've tried a few other clients, but keep coming back to SAB...usually feeling dirty

Hey jollande,
You may want to give Giganews a trial run (or Super News). I bounced around to a lot of different providers (including Astra) before, and I now refuse to use anything other than Giganews (or a Giganews front-end, a la Super News).
I'm not sure how their AUS servers are, but they're great in the US.
Cheers,

Thanks daemox,
We looked at Giganews. The only thing seemingly keeping me with Astraweb, is the once off fee system.
For $25 USD i get 180G/bytes, unlimited rate limit (supposedly) and 50 connections.
Whereas Giganews and others have a monthly fee... regardless of usage. We are not extremely heavy users, so i like the idea of pay as you go.
But....if changing means better speeds, i will have to reconsider. What sort of speeds do you see with GN/SN?

I'm able to max out my 100Mbit/sec fiber (which means 11 MBytes/sec)
At least when I use my PC. My little low-power Atom server gets to about 6MByte/sec.
