If you click the RSS button, then select one of the RSS feeds it reads the feed which can 30 seconds or so, but I can live with that. If you change the filters in any way (add, delete, change priority) it re-reads the RSS feed. Every single change results in a re-read of the RSS feed. This gets extremely irratating if you make more than one change.

It doesn't re-read the feed. It re-evaluates the stored content against your new/changed filters.
For a large feed combined with a long filter list, this may take a while.
Do you happen to have set a high logging level (like "debug") on the Status page?
This will add to the time needed.
