Not maxing out speed

Hey all new to sabnzbd as of this weekend and like what I see, been using Newsbin for years.  Decided to install sabnzbd on my unRaid machine and all seems to be working except i'm only getting 2.7MB/s with sab, it stays exactly at 2.7MB/s and never budges.  I have a 24Mbit/s connection (3.0MB/s)  I can pause it and open up Newsbin on my windows machine and I get a solid 3.0MB/s (24Mbit/s) and its always rock solid at that so I know what speeds I should be getting. 

I changed the cache to 120M but that didn't change anything. 

I can copy to the disk that sab is downloading to across the network at a solid 60-65MB/s, it is not part of my unRaid array.

I then installed a copy of sab to my win 7 machine with the same setup to make sure it wasn't an unRaid thing and I get exactly 2.7MB/s on the win 7 machine as well.  Paused it and downloaded the same NZB in Newsbin and I get my full 3.0MB/s

Using both Astraweb and usenetserver.  I tried one or the other with different connection counts, and combined, and it never veers from 2.7MB/s

I tried messing with the speed limiter and i can lower my speed with no issues but say i set it at 4000KB/s its stays at 2.7MB/s

Anyone have any ideas?

SABnzbd is a bit slower than some other programs because it's written in Python.
It might be a bit suboptimal as far as max line utilisation is concerned.

BTW: did you measure the speed with an independent program?
Don't believe what either SABnzbd or Newsbin tell you their speed is.

What do you suggest for speed on linux?  I don't mean to highjack the thread but I recently got 40mbs down and I can't even keep a consistent download of 3mbs.  Speedtest.net has confirmed what I should be capable of.  I'm open to any suggestions to increase the speed.  I'd even be willing to build a new computer.   What generally happens is I hit the max speed of like 3mbs and then it drops to almost nothing and then goes back up.  And this keeps happening.  My end goal is to get 10mbs but let me know if that is unrealistic and/or where the bottle neck might be.

EDIT: I upped my cache to 256M from nothing (doh!) and now I'm getting roughly 5.25Mbs.  It is an improvement but i'd still love to get to the goal of 10mbs.

It's sometimes hard to predict what the speed will be.
I can get 10 MBytes/sec on a Core2Duo (that's both on a Windows box and a miniMac).
My Atom-based WHS server does about 5-6 MBytes/sec.
My VMWare based Ubuntu 10 image running on the Windows box gets 9 MByte/sec.
I have a D-Link DIR-655 modem connected to a 100 Mbit/sec symmetric fiber.

im curently running SABnzbd 0.6.1 on my nas box "intel celeron 1.6ghz" and my top speed is about 8MByte/sec

on my imac with a core i3 i can get 17MByte/sec. im looking to upgrade my nas, can you give me some information about your Atom-based WHS server processor speed ...

Because im looking for nas with atom 525 dont now if it enough for 15MByte/sec

Single core Intel Atom 230 / 1.6 GHz, can do 64bit.
SABnzbd won't use more than one core.
