Install windows software on NAS

Post by hortoristic »

Is there a NAS device I can install Sabnzbd and Sickbeard on? From what I'm finding - there seems to be folks installing Linux apps on routers and NAS - but I'm not a Linux guy but a Windows guy - am I out of luck?

I hate leaving my computer on 24/7 to keep all my TV and Movies in sync - seems a NAS could/should do this.

I'm a Linux person, so I don't know much Windows, but I think Windows Storage Server and Windows Home Server are meant for that. Google it, and you'll see complete NAS-products with those Windows-versions.

It appears with Windows I in essence need a computer up and running 24/7 - I already have thout - but thought a NAS or other network device might work instead

If I did suss out Linux, you say then I could?

There are a number of NAS devices capable of running SABnzbd.
Mostly the ones with relatively much CPU power (think Intel Atom-like) and RAM (1-2G).
Some are supported by packages, for some you need to do everything yourself.
This site can only offer limited support. There are just too many NAS devices.
Some people report success with some Synology NASses.
It can be a bit of a rough journey.

For what you want, you'd need to be running Windows on the NAS, which you will not find in a consumer grade NAS. It just isn't worth trying to run Windows on something so low powered. Plus there's the whole license bundling issue.
